Enforcement is not a Solution

March 31, 2022

Municipal politics is hard. One of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. Learned a lot. Will never do it again. It was not a thankless task. We improved our community measurably in our four-year term. I do not envy the decisions Hamilton City Council are wrestling with. Particularly with regards to homelessness and encampments.  Yesterday Hamilton Council dedicated over 400 thousand dollars to beef up enforcement of encampment evictions. It is easy to quantify what 400 thousand dollars could do to improve things for people who are homeless. For instance, that amount of money would go a long way to sustaining a transitional Tiny Home support community.  Council has a responsibility to improve our community. Not select parts of our community. Many of the current Council have been around the table 10 years or more. Homelessness has also been around the Council table for decades. Plenty of time to address and find solutions to a crisis level community issue. Enforcement is not a solution. It is not a band-aid. It is an ongoing tragedy for those most in need in our community.
